Joseph Conrad settled in England in 1894, the year before he published his first novel. He was hired to take a steamship into Africa, and according to Conrad, the experience of seeing firsthand the horrors of colonial rule left him a changed man. He was made a Master Mariner, and served more than sixteen years before an event inspired him to try his hand at writing. He then began to work aboard British ships, learning English from his shipmates.
He joined the French Merchant Marine and briefly employed himself as a wartime gunrunner. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced numerous authors and many films have been adapted from, or inspired by, his works. Conrad is considered an early modernist, though his works still contain elements of 19th-century realism. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutable universe. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He joined the British merchant marine in 1878, and was granted British citizenship in 1886.
